AAR Bertrix
(After Action Report from June 19, 2001)
We arrived at the town of Bertrix, if town is what you could call that burned out shell. I dont think there was a building left untouched by the heavy fighting that had, and was continuing to wage all around it. My crew got their gear together and we headed out to lend support with our A13. There was a line of armor to the North, which was continually engaged with enemy panzers as they came over from Neufchateu and surrounding areas.
I immediately spotted a panzer in the tree line to our right. PANZER RIGHT! I yelled at the driver. Vaughn immediately healed the beast around to face the threat. My 40mm cannon opened fire and saw him race out into the open where he was rapidly eliminated by the amassed armor. We settled in looking for the next panzer when BAM! Someone turned out the lights and we were dead.
Anyway, so we respawned and headed out again. This time we mustered what group of the GTLB rifles and 3RTR we could gather and headed toward St.Hubert. We were intending on threading between Libramont and Libin, but we ran into a large enemy convoy headed South toward Bertrix! I guess Gerry really didnt like having his base in allied hands, because they werent playing around! Well, needless to say, we had to respawn back at Bertrix and this time, Spins hopped into a Spit and took off to provide battlefield Intel over our RW connection. We headed out and this time stuck to the tree line to the South. We crept along towards Neufchateu while Spins strafed the few panzers that got too close to us. As we approached the town, we noticed that several other A13s had decided the same thing and we advancing with us, but down the road! We stayed well south, especially when an 88 parked itself just at the Western edge of the city and started taking pot shots at us!
As we began approaching from the South, we say some allied troops heading into the city, so we came crashing into the base to drop out infantry off. No sooner had they hopped off and begun taking buildings than a panzer came out from around the corner. PANZER FRONT! I yelled and fired off two quick rounds only to have the world fade away as our ammo cooked off! This time, however, we were able to respawn IN Neufchateu!! So in we came again! We made sure the area was secure. The place was crawling with allied armor now, so we felt it would hold for awhile. We picked up our infantry and headed out toward Wiltz! Here we come! We were under heavy air attack for quite some time until we suffered an accident and rolled the tank.
By this time, it was getting to be dusk, so I figured (since Spins had returned to an A13 and Vaughn was now in a light French tank) that I would bring a truck to transport the troops! I drove out of the bay and invited anyone close by to hop on for a raid on Wiltz. Several soldiers ran toward me and jumped on. Off we went as the sun set and darkness fell. It was impossible for some reason for me to see the road; so dark was the night. New moon, I thought great for attacking the base! I headed out as fast as I could get that junk heap to go cross-country. No air attacks, either! After about 15 minutes, we reached the crossroads that marked the halfway point only to discover that several of the infantry were having problems riding the a13s they had been on. I went to get them and discovered that my men had fallen off as well! For some reason, the troops were unable to load into the truck OR a tank! Well, by this time, the sun was rising and the planes were back. I tried several times to load infantry, until a 109 finally strafed me.
This was the end of my involvement with the attack. I believe we wouldve been successful had it not been for the No Free Ride bug! That prevented us from slipping in about 6-10 infantry into Wiltz under cover of darkness. I can only hope that the lessons learned here might be put to good use in the coming war! Good fighting, soldiers!! It was an honor to serve with you all!
